Margrit von Kleist was born in Berlin in 1924. At the age of five, she attended private school. Four years later, she went to a Lyceum (Girls secondary school) in Berlin where she studied another four years until Hitler's regime forced every student to become a member of the Hitler youth. Her family was not in favor of this and decided to send her and her sisters to a private boarding school in South Germany, where it was not an issue. Margrit stayed there until she finished twelfth grade. Back in Berlin, she attended the D. Neumann-Neurode School for three years where she learned her grandfather's methods of Therapeutical Physiotherapy for infants and toddlers. She had to deal with many heartbreaking and devastating issues during WWII, as everyone in Europe did. Shortly after the war, she traveled through Switzerland, where she fulfilled her lifelong dream of climbing the Matterhorn. In 1952, she went to Chile, South America, to visit her father, whom she hardly knew since he had left his family when she was a child. She stayed there, got married, and had two children, a girl, and a boy, both born in the City of Concepcion, north of Lota and South of Santiago. Margrit and her husband Aribert Baron von Kleist were extremely happy, and they enjoyed the country and the people for almost seven years. In 1959, they immigrated to Canada with $100.00 in their possession and two children, ages three and a half and six. Not speaking the language well and dealing with unforeseen challenges made their new life in the Canada difficult. Aribert went to University to get his Master's degree in Canadian forestry and worked as an office cleaner with a big company late in the evenings to be able to pay the tuition. Margrit worked nights as a nurse's aide, so she could look after the children during the day. The couple supported each other to make it work. They couldn't afford University for both of them, and Margrit had to find an alternative approach to her profession. She did and was very successful for many years in Toronto until the couple retired to a beautiful little town on Georgian Bay.

My wife and I are personal friends of Margrit who is our neighbour. The book which is a part of Magrits life before and after the Second World War is really amazing. I do not want to go into detail as this would spoil anybody's reading of the book, but I would recommend this true story and how life was, from a German perspective. Margrit today is in her late 80's and still has the heart of a Lioness just like the picture on the front of the book climbing the Matterhorn.Diane and Bernard.

I loved the book and could not put it down. I found myself saying that I will just finish the chapter...only to start another one.
An insightful piece of history. Although the author's writing style is simple, the story line is still very enjoyable.
This is the most amazing story from a remarkable person. Margrit has first hand experience with many events in her life that most people would consider major turning points in history! She also details some of her conversations and encounters with some of the most influential and infamous people of the 20th century, including none other than Hitler! If you have an interest in history at all, Margrit's book will prove to be a faourite!
This is an amazing life story of a young girl growing up in Germany during the years before and during World War II, talking about the challenges she experienced, and a personal meeting with Hitler; and then living through the disaster and turmoil which followed, - a daily battle of wits to find new ways to survive. After the War she emigrates to South America, gets married and has children, and then they decide to move their family to Canada, without enough knowledge of English, and to build a new life with hard work, and a lot of ingenuity and optimism. It is an exciting read.
Particularly suitable for young people who want to gain first-hand knowledge of life in those incredible and terrible times, from a lady who never gave up. Manfred Harpe
This book pulled me in, and I found it hard to put down. Ms. von Kleist's description of her life is very matter-of-fact, but that only emphasizes what a strong personality she is, and how dramatically her life was shaped by world events.
We hear a lot of WWII stories from the perspective of survivors of the camps, people who fought for the allies, members of the Resistance movements or even those in Britain who lived through the bombing, but we don't often get the 'everyday German' perspective. The author is very open about how little she understood what was happening at the time even as she dealt with deprivation and danger. And although it is clear how shocked and shamed she was as she began to understand the full picture later on, Ms. von Kleist clearly did not let it ever stop her from living a full and productive life.
I think this book would make fabulous reading for any teenager studying WWII. It is filled with many incidents and perspectives, each of which could be the springboard for a rich discussion about how economics and politics shape our lives. It is also a book about everyday courage, and how a young woman stayed true to herself. It is not often that such an easy read can deliver so much richness and food for thought.
